Joe Foltz's Genealogy Page
Production Resources

To start with, I use Family Tree Maker to maintain my genealogy database
It' a great product, and I strongly recommend it. They also have a huge variety
of Genealogy research tools, CD's and much more.

For over all HTML editing and project tracking, I use Alchemy Version 1.1e. It's
a great product and, while it has a little bit of a learning curve, is great for
dealing with large sites and multiple sites! How would you like to do a search and
replace across your entire web site? Go Alchemy - they have a newer version that I
will be converting to soon. Alchemy! GET IT!

Another cool product (this one is shareware), is GED2HTML. Basically, you export
your Family Tree Maker database to a GED file, and then run it past GED2HTML. It
creates all of the index, family and individual pages. It also created the Surname,
Persons and Sources pages! The only problem is that you end up with hundreds of HTML
files to edit if you want a certain look - as I do. (But, that's where Alchemy helps
out!) I'd love to direct you to the site for GED2HTML, but frankly, I lost the program
and the URL in a hard drive crash awhile back! However, I'm fairly certain you can find
it here!

Pictures are an important part of any genealogy, and I've got some good ones!
Some pictures, like Grandma and Grandpa Carney's Wedding photo, I've had
professionally retouched (check your Yellow Pages!). But, I use a
MicroTek E3 scanner to scan the images. Some images are scanned using a Mustek
hand scanner, others with a Mustek 600IIIEP fladbed scanner, but now my images
are MUCH better.

With pictures, software is as important as the scanner! For pictures in decent
shape, I use MicroGraphics PhotoPaint most often. Sometimes I use Corel's Paint-
it depends on my mood and my needs. But, when I have a really serious picture
that hasn't weathered the years very well, I use Kai's Photo Soap by MetaTools.

Soap is not an easy program to use, and it's not for use in big scanning projects,
but if you really need to clean up an picture, get SOAP!

Okay, since you asked!

This project has been going on for so long that I've used just about every hardware
type that's been created. The original "document" was started on a small AS/400; I
moved it to a state of the art 386PC! From there, it moved on to a 486-66MHz PC and
it is now on a Pentium II 200MHz PC. In every case, (except the AS/400) the main text
that I've written has been in Word Perfect, now by Corel.
